Chapter 1: Ely Lam In Trouble
Alone and wandering the streets at ten o’clock at night, Ely Lam stubbornly kept calling her father, but no one answered the phone. Exhausted, she sat beside a bus stop, looking at the dim streetlights. Not a single vehicle passed by.
Only then did she understand why her classmates had been constantly approaching her these past few days. It turned out they had discovered that Ely Lam was the eldest daughter of the Lam family and wanted to get close to her so they could ask her for help. Thinking about it, she laughed bitterly. She carried the title of the Lam family’s eldest daughter, yet she was so poor that she did not even have enough money to pay her tuition. For the entire month, she had been struggling to find work. Once she found a job, she worked without a single day of rest. What benefit was there to being an abandoned heiress like her? What would happen if she no longer existed in this world?
Knox Lam had never really cared about her. He only cared about his own interests. So when Ketki Lu suggested that she move out and take care of herself, he immediately kicked her out of the house, saying that she needed to learn to become independent. But what about Juhi Lam? Why wasn’t she kicked out? They must have been afraid that Ely Lam would expose the shocking secret involving the mother and daughter of the Luu family. That must have been why they had hurriedly driven her out. It had to be that way.
Because she had finished work too late, there were no more buses. And she did not have enough money to pay for a taxi either. That was why Ely Lam took a chance and called her father, hoping to beg him to send someone to pick her up and take her part of the way to her rented room. Unfortunately, she was not lucky enough to receive such a favor. After calling him countless times without anyone answering, she could no longer get through.
She sighed softly. With no other choice, she stood up from the bench and began walking back to her rented room.
Ely Lam had a beautiful figure and delicate features. At school, the male students always paid attention to her because of this. But having a beautiful face and figure also brought her countless troubles, and she was often harassed by bad people. Now, walking alone on the main road, she was very afraid, especially since she did not know any martial arts to protect herself.
As these thoughts crossed her mind, she felt her whole body tremble with fear. Recently, several cases of people disappearing in the city had occurred at night. She did not want such bad luck to fall upon her, so she silently prayed as she walked.
20 Kilometers Away — The Lam Family Home
The spacious bedroom was beautifully furnished. Anyone could tell at a glance that it belonged to a young girl.
Indeed, this was Juhi Lam’s bedroom. She had been staying in this room ever since Ely Lam was kicked out of the house. Originally, Ely Lam had been the owner of this room, but now Juhi Lam was the one who possessed it.
Ketki Lu held a comb and brushed her daughter’s hair, her sinister eyes staring into the mirror. Juhi Lam was naturally not as beautiful as Ely Lam, but she had beautiful hair. Because of this, Ketki Lu was extremely pleased with it and cherished it dearly.
“Mom, please don’t look at the mirror with such a frightening expression, okay? Thinking that you are looking at me with those eyes really scares me.”
As Juhi Lam spoke, she looked into the mirror. The reflection showed the image of her mother.
“Mom is sorry for frightening my beloved daughter. I was just thinking about how miserable that girl must be wandering around outside right now.”
Her voice was only loud enough for the two of them to hear. Sweat appeared on Juhi Lam’s forehead as she wondered what her mother was planning to do.
“You mean Ely Lam is still outside right now?”
She asked just to make sure.
“That’s right. I saw her going to work with my own eyes. Besides, she called your father earlier. She was probably calling for help, but I already deleted the call history.”
When Juhi Lam heard her mother’s words, a ripple stirred in her heart.
That’s right.
This was her opportunity.
While the mother and daughter of the Luu family were sitting together plotting and scheming, Ely Lam had already walked quite a distance. Her legs were weak and exhausted. There was only one kilometer left before she reached her rented room, so she had to force herself to walk faster.
Although this was a city, this particular road was quite deserted. There was only her and the faint streetlights. All the shops along the roadside had already turned off their lights. The night fog was now thicker than before, and there was also a slight chill in the air. If she was not dressed warmly enough, she could catch a cold and might not even be able to get out of bed the next day.
Ely Lam was aware of her current situation. She could not afford to get sick. As long as she worked enough days, she would have enough money next month to pay her tuition and rent.
Even while thinking about all this, she did not allow herself to slow down. Her knees were numb and sore, but she still had to keep walking.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a motorcycle coming from a distance. The dazzling headlights caused Ely Lam to stumble and fall toward the side of the road. The sound of the engine grew closer and closer.
Ely Lam sensed that something was wrong. She quickly got up and ran as fast as she could. She wanted to reach the houses across the road as quickly as possible and knock on someone’s door for help.
She did not care who they were. Right now, she was alone and had no way to resist if they had bad intentions and wanted to take her away.
Despair surrounded Ely Lam.
On the motorcycles were several tall men with sinister faces. They could be local gangsters, or perhaps they were hired killers. Who knew?
There was not the slightest bit of hope in Ely Lam’s heart as several motorcycles stopped in front of her one after another.
There was nowhere left for her to retreat.
“Click!”
The tall man in the lead lowered the kickstand and stepped off his motorcycle. One after another, the men behind him also got off their bikes.
Ely Lam’s face turned pale. She tightly clasped her hands together. She could not run, and she was too weak.
What should she do now?
The man in the lead reached to his side and pulled out a knife. The reflected light from the blade was painfully bright.
The five men looked at Ely Lam as if she were a mouse about to be eaten by a cat. Seeing her helpless state, they were extremely pleased.
“Who are you? Get out of my way, or I’ll call the police!” Ely Lam threatened.
“Call the police? Who would believe you? Hahaha.”
One of the men in black laughed as he lit a cigarette.
“I heard the eldest daughter of the Lam family ran away from home and got into an accident on the road. There are no cameras here and no witnesses either.”
This was the story they had fabricated. As long as they ran her over and killed her, there would be nothing the police could do even if they wanted to investigate.
Ely Lam suddenly understood.
These men were complete strangers, yet they knew her identity. This must have been a plot devised by the mother and daughter of the Luu family.
But how could she escape now?
Without another thought, she turned and ran as fast as she could without looking back. The men were caught off guard and immediately chased after her.
The five men rushed toward her, trying to catch her. Ely Lam ran into the grounds of an abandoned drinking establishment. Two or three of the men surrounded her, forcing her into a corner of the building.
The two sides struggled.
Because she was exhausted, Ely Lam was about to be caught when she suddenly heard the sound of police sirens in the distance.
“Damn it! Why are there police here at this hour?”
“I don’t know. Get out of here quickly. The other motorcycles are still outside.”
One of the big men shouted.
“You little bitch, next time we’ll kill you immediately. You won’t be as lucky as you are today.”
The crew-cut man spoke regretfully.
“So we’re giving up, boss?”
“You want to stay here and get arrested?”
“Yes… What about the money?”
“Idiot! Let’s go!”
Ely Lam breathed a sigh of relief because they were afraid enough to leave.
The men panicked, ran outside, jumped onto their motorcycles, and disappeared.
By the time the police cars arrived, Ely Lam’s legs were already exhausted, and she was sitting helplessly on the floor in the corner of the building.
