Chapter 2: This Man Is Really Handsome
Liam Vuong was sitting in the back seat of the police car, his legs crossed and his arms folded across his chest, with his eyes closed as he slept. If it were not for his best friend, Paul Hu, inviting him out for drinks, he would probably be sleeping soundly at home by now.
“Hey, hey, you only had a few drinks and you’re already drunk?” Paul Hu said as he looked into the rearview mirror and saw that his friend had fallen asleep.
“Don’t bother me. Let me rest for a while. I’ve had a lot of work lately, and I don’t even get enough sleep.” Liam Vuong waved his hand impatiently. He was busy and had no time to rest, yet his friend had still invited him out.
“Alright, it’s my fault for bothering you. Get some rest.” After saying that, Paul Hu slowed the car down.
Suddenly, Paul Hu saw a group of young men gathered ahead. From their appearance, they did not look like good people, and their shifty eyes kept looking around. Several of them were heading toward the awning of a nearby house. It seemed like they were planning to do something suspicious.
As he drove closer, he noticed that when the headlights shone inside, there seemed to be a frightened girl sitting in the corner of the building. Realizing that something was wrong, Paul Hu immediately turned on the police siren.
The deafening siren frightened the men, and they ran away for their lives. Paul Hu happily curled his lips into a smile, but the moment he saw that the girl sitting inside was Ely Lam, he immediately panicked.
“Skrrt!”
Paul Hu slammed on the brakes, stopped the car, and without saying anything to Liam Vuong, opened the door and ran inside.
Liam Vuong had been sleeping with his eyes closed. The sudden jolt made him open his eyes irritably. He wanted to curse Paul Hu, but his friend was nowhere to be seen. After looking through the car window and noticing someone in the distance, he decided not to get angry.
Ely Lam had exhausted herself struggling with the group of men and was sitting in the corner of the building. She saw the police car but no longer had the strength to call for help. It was only when she heard quick footsteps approaching that she realized someone had come to rescue her.
“Why are you here?” Paul Hu reached out and pulled Ely Lam to her feet.
“Paul Hu? Is that you?” Ely Lam took his offered hand and held onto it, overjoyed.
“Yes. Are you hurt anywhere? And how did you end up in this situation? Were those men trying to do something to you?” Paul Hu looked at Ely Lam. This girl really seemed to have terrible luck.
“I’m fine. Luckily, you arrived in time. Otherwise, they were going to kill me. I don’t even know what would have appeared in tomorrow’s news.”
“Kill you?” Realizing how serious the situation was, Paul Hu fell silent in thought.
“Yes. I finished work late today, and there was no vehicle to take me home, so I planned to walk back to my rented room.” Ely Lam thought how lucky she was that Paul Hu had arrived in time to save her, and even luckier that he was a police officer.
“You actually dared to walk alone on such a deserted road at this hour?”
“Yes…”
“Alright, we’ll talk while we go. And don’t tell me you were wandering around the streets because you had no way to get home? Wait a minute, why did you say you were going back to a rented room?” Paul Hu opened the car door and let her sit in the passenger seat.
“I was kicked out. If I don’t live in a rented room, where else can I live?” Ely Lam said as she fastened her seat belt. Her eyes looked straight ahead, filled with endless sadness.
Paul Hu did not know what else to say. He remained silent for a moment before saying, “If you don’t have transportation to get to work, I’ll bring my motorcycle over and let you borrow it. I don’t usually ride it anyway. If you keep coming home late like tonight and something happens again, what are you going to do? If I hadn’t happened to pass by here just now, there might have been a murder tomorrow.”
“What could I do…” Ely Lam said, her eyes turning red.
“What exactly happened? I’ll help you deal with it.” Paul Hu turned the steering wheel and drove through an intersection. As his eyes swept across the surroundings, he saw the group of men from earlier entering a bar.
“No need. You can’t help me forever. As for the motorcycle, I’m already grateful that you’re letting me borrow it temporarily. If things really become urgent, I’ll ask you for help, okay?”
“Alright. If you don’t want to talk about it, that’s up to you. I respect your decision. But don’t let something like this happen again.” Paul Hu fell into thought. He knew she was hiding something, but he could not ask any further.
The night was quiet, and neither of them said anything else. Until Paul Hu was about to drive Ely Lam home, he suddenly received a call from his superior and had to leave immediately for a mission.
When he looked back, he saw that she had already fallen deeply asleep. Meanwhile, the man in the back seat was staring at him.
Because the two of them had treated Liam Vuong as if he were invisible all this time, he was extremely angry. He had remained silent for so long, yet his friend had completely forgotten that he even existed. His friend really had forgotten his buddy the moment a girl appeared.
“Do you have something you want to say to me?” Liam Vuong looked into the rearview mirror. Seeing that the girl had fallen deeply asleep, he spoke coldly.
“I have to go on a mission. Could you please call your secretary and have him drive over to take this girl home for me?” Paul Hu said with a grin.
Liam Vuong looked toward the front seat, thought for a moment, and then said, “Alright!”
After all, it was an urgent mission. He could not interfere with an officer carrying out his duty to serve and protect national security.
So, when the car reached the intersection, they waited for Liam Vuong’s car to arrive before Paul Hu drove away. But what they did not expect was that Ely Lam had developed a fever.
Because of this, she was not fully conscious. After arranging for her to sit in the back seat with him, Liam Vuong repeatedly asked for her home address, but she never woke up. He had no choice but to tell his secretary to drive both of them back to his house.
Liam Vuong’s Home
Assistant Zhou Tian had arrived here early. After helping his boss carry Ely Lam into the house and placing her on the bed, he immediately went to buy fever-reducing medicine for her.
Liam Vuong also instructed the housekeeper to take care of her. As for himself, he returned to his room to shower and rest first.
Liam Vuong’s home was in the opposite direction from the rented room where Ely Lam lived. He had wanted to take her home, but at the moment he had no choice. In her current condition, it was best for her to stay at his house.
Besides, he had spent the entire day exhausted from working at the company and then had to go drinking. Right now, his entire head hurt wherever he touched it.
Ely Lam remained unconscious, showing no signs of getting better. At night, although she had taken medicine, perhaps because she was in a bad emotional state, her fever continued to rise.
When the housekeeper was about to leave, she went upstairs to inform him and reminded him that he needed to keep an eye on the girl downstairs in the living room at night.
Liam Vuong hummed in response. Although he was exhausted, he did not dare to sleep too deeply.
He walked from his bedroom to the living room. After thinking it over several times, he decided to go downstairs to the kitchen, prepare some warm water, and bring it to Ely Lam’s room.
Liam Vuong normally lived alone. He usually hired a housekeeper by the hour, so at the moment, there was only him in the house.
Having an additional woman in the house unexpectedly left him unsure of what he should do.
He carried the water to the door of the room and knocked several times, but he received no response.
Liam Vuong was about to leave when he heard sobbing sounds coming from inside. He hurriedly opened the door and went in.
Ely Lam was lying on the bed, her body trembling slightly. He did not know what she was dreaming about, but her entire body began trembling more violently.
Liam Vuong looked at her and wondered whether he should wake her up. Then his headache returned.
Liam Vuong quickly opened the bedroom door and walked out. He crossed the living room, opened the cabinet, took out a bottle of wine, opened it, and took a long drink.
This was how he suppressed his chronic headaches. Whenever this happened, drinking alcohol would reduce the pain and make him feel better.
Liam Vuong placed the bottle of wine on the table and returned to the room, intending to wake her up and see how she was doing.
Fortunately, the hourly housekeeper had been quite thoughtful. She had prepared hot porridge in the kitchen for him and Ely Lam.
He took a bowl, scooped some porridge for her, then took the medicine and went upstairs to the living room.
It was now one o’clock in the morning. He looked at the wall clock, and his eyebrows lifted slightly.
The bedroom door opened. Ely Lam was still lying on the bed, unconscious.
Liam Vuong placed the porridge and medicine on the table beside the bed. He wanted to wake her up.
In her dream, Ely Lam returned to her childhood, when her mother was still by her side and she was truly happy.
Then her mother left.
Ely Lam clung to her mother’s arm, begging her to stay by her side, but her mother left forever.
Liam Vuong had just placed his hand on her forehead to check her condition when Ely Lam suddenly grabbed his hand tightly. She cried and called for her mother in her dream, sobbing uncontrollably.
Seeing this, Liam Vuong did not know what to do. A girl as pitiful and sorrowful as her must have had a terrible past.
For some reason, he was able to sit beside her for such a long time without feeling annoyed at all.
Normally, it was very difficult for anyone to get close to him.
Liam Vuong looked at her trembling, curved eyelashes. Without realizing it, he raised a finger and touched them, then slowly lowered it toward her lips.
Driven by the attraction of hormones, Liam Vuong lowered his head and kissed her on the lips.
The Next Morning…
When Ely Lam woke up, it was seven o’clock in the morning. She was completely startled by the unfamiliar surroundings.
What frightened her even more was…
She was lying beside a strange man who was incredibly handsome.
Her mind was thrown into turmoil. She checked her body, and fortunately, their clothes were still intact.
But her arm was tightly wrapped around his arm, leaving a red mark on his skin.
Ely Lam was startled fully awake by her own actions.
Last night, she had gotten a ride home with Paul Hu. So why was she in such an unfamiliar place now?
